RALEIGH — Allen McDavid sat down outside
a big white tent on the east end of
Fayetteville Street as smoke from barbecue
cookers and the scent of meat bathed in
spice rubs and secret sauces blended in the
open air.

Heat, humidity and the threat of
thunderstorms didn't deter visitors
Saturday from attending the second
annual Port City RibFest, where the
smoke rising from vendor booths at
Battleship Park was almost as warm as
the weather.

Last year the Cape Fear River
went up in smoke, and it was finger-
lickin’ good. No, there wasn't a
massive fire, but the inaugural Port
City RibFest, rounded by AKA
Entertainment and Media, did heat
up things at the Battleship USS
North Carolina Memorial Park.
Small bites: RibFest gets a
As in summers past, WNC residents can
expect a barbecue rib festival to happen
this month at the WNC Agricultural Center.
But this year there’s a new RibFest in town.
What has been called since 2007 the
Carolina Mountain RibFest will now be
known as Carolina West RibFest and will
sport an edgy new look aimed at appealing
to a broader, more alternative audience
A very different RibFest,
ASHEVILLE – Allen McDavid’s friends
have some unusual talents.

McDavid, who lives above his wife’s
metaphysical store in Greensboro, is
taking over this year’s Carolina
Mountain RibFest at the Western North
Carolina Agricultural Center. The
event begins July 11 and runs through
the weekend and features all of the
hallmarks of a barbecue festival.
Lightnin' Charlie and the
Upsetters to Perform at
the East West BBQ Fest
The Blues may be where Lightnin’
Charlie’s heart truly lies, but the multi-
instrumentalist, singer/songwriter is
extremely versatile.  Lightnin’s
musical roots run deep, and his
exceptional musicianship allows him
to perform 60s soul, 50’s rock ‘n’ roll,
and rhythm and blues and make
each style all his own.

Musician ‘Blind Boy’ Paxton
headlines Twin City RibFest
This year’s Twin City RibFest, running
today through Sunday, promises the
best barbecued meat and an eclectic
mix of original music acts, including
Jerron “Blind Boy” Paxton, named in
2014 as the Village Voice’s pick for
Top Blues Act in New York. The 26-
year-old musician will perform on the
festival’s Main Stage on Saturday at 9:
30 p.m.
